 Diamond to pay US$3.1 million
A lawsuit resulting from aflatoxin-contaminated petfood made by Diamond Pet Foods in 2005 that killed dozens of dogs nationwide has been settled, according to the Associated Press. The company will pay $US3.1 million in a settlement with pet owners.

The petfood was produced at Diamond Pet Foods' plant in South Carolina. The company will set up a fund to reimburse pet owners for the loss of their dogs, veterinary bills and the cost of any unreturned contaminated food, said attorney Jim Andrews, who represented a Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, family that sued the company.

Diamond Pet Foods, based in Meta, Missouri, USA, acknowledged that workers at its Gaston, South Carolina, USA, plant failed to follow internal testing procedures to ensure its products were safe. The company made the acknowledgment after the Food and Drug Administration released a report showing the company has no record of test results for 12 shipments of corn in 2005, when grain tainted with the deadly fungus slipped into the plant.

The contaminated petfood was sold in 23 states. Diamond recalled about 20 varieties of dog and cat food when a New York veterinarian said in December 2005 that she had linked a dog's death to the company's food. For more information, go to www.recalledpetfoodsettlement.com.

Arkat Nutrition bounces back after tornado
Just four months after a devastating tornado caused US$19 million in damage to Arkat Nutrition Inc.’s plant, the southeast Dumas, Arkansas, USA animal feed manufacturer was back in operation. The dormant hulk of Arkat’s Plant 1 is the only visible remnant of the 150mph winds that ripped through the area. The storm either destroyed or damaged 25 businesses and nearly 100 homes in Dumas, according to the National Weather Service. Last week, in the adjacent Plant 2, a 150,000-square-foot manufacturing building, a handful of employees were controlling automated equipment that churned out 8-ton batches of premium Enhance brand “Hunter’s Edge Formula,” a dry, pelletized dog food. Meanwhile, in nearby Plant 3, a 125,000-square-foot building, Enhance brand “Puppy Formula” was being bagged and warehoused on shrink-wrapped pallets awaiting sale.

In April, Arkat will begin its seasonal production of catfish feed — the company’s original product line, which still accounts for about 60% of total sales — along with commercial feed for baitfish, tilapia and shrimp. About 85% of Arkat’s raw materials are produced in Arkansas. Soybean meal is the major ingredient in commercial fish feed, and chicken meal is the main component of petfoods. Arkat spends about US$32 million annually to buy those and other products including rice bran, corn, corn gluten and wheat. In addition to catfish feed, Arkat now manufactures animal feed for dogs, cats, horses, deer, koi and turtles. The company, which can produce 350,000 tons of pelletized animal feed each year, currently sells about 135,000 tons annually. During the past six years, Arkat has branched out of the highly seasonal catfish feed business into other animal-feed markets that offer greater year-round growth opportunities.

“The way we’re successful is by carefully selecting niche markets and then hiring expert nutritionists to formulate species-specific diets,” said Rick Wohlschlaeger, president and chief executive officer of the company. Arkat’s greatest expansion has occurred in the dog and cat food markets. Arkat’s petfood brands range from its super premium VF or Veterinarian Formulated Complete to low-end offerings of “Well Fed Red” for dogs and “Cat Man Blue” for cats. About 18% of Arkat’s petfoods are exported, Wohlschlaeger said, with shipments going to Canada, China, Hong Kong, Israel, Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad and Turkey. “We have the No. 1 cat food in Israel, shipping about 10 container loads a month,” he said.

 Almo Nature lands in Canada
After expanding to Switzerland, Germany, France and the UK, the Italian petfood manufacturer Almo Nature lands in the North American market, with a new branch in Quebec, Canada. The company foresees that this new opening will bring its 2008 turnover to 50 million Euro, with an export share of 40%. After Italy (the country of origin for the company), Almo Nature’s first market is Germany which represents 70% of the European turnover, followed by Switzerland, France, UK, The Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavia. “The choice of Canada as our first overseas market depended on the relationships we had in the country which allowed us to create a dedicated logistic and commercial structure,” Pier Giovanni Capellino, CEO and president of Almo Nature, said. The launch of products for the Canadian market is scheduled for March 2008.

Bulgaria hungry for more petfood
The market for petfood and pet care products in Bulgaria has continued to record dynamic growth over the last few years, and in 2007 posted current value growth of 12%. According to producers, this growth has not been due to an increase in pet ownership or the pet population in general, but by the increased tendency of pet owners to buy prepared food rather than give their pets homemade food.

Greater consumer awareness and the increasing humanization of pets should continue driving growth in this market. Over the next five years, it is expected that around 20% of dogs and more than 30% of cats will be fed predominantly on prepared food. At the same time, consumers can be expected to switch to more premium products, which offer better quality for the price.

Alcan Packaging introduces new bag in Europe
Alcan Packaging has introduced a new bag, which is the only one of its kind in Europe, according to the company. The bag offers a number of benefits, from how easy it is to implement on the production line to how practical and simple it is for users to open. The bag's first characteristic is an added flat bottom, which ensures that the bag takes its shape instantly and makes it possible to optimize filling rates and significantly reduce waste on the packaging line. The product features a lateral gusset that is carefully cut, providing complete waterproofing and conservation over time thanks to the inert gas used in the packaging process. The packaging offers visibility and legibility of the brand name, as well as allowing companies to offer products that arrive completely fresh.

Extrusion method for palatable lentil snacks
Researchers from the US Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have developed a process of using extrusion technology to make healthy and tasty snacks out of legumes. The research agency, part of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), uses extrusion cooking, where a variety of processes such as mixing, compressing, kneading and expanding take place in one machine, to make the crunchy snacks.

"Extrusion technology isn't new," notes researcher Jose Berrios, "but we are the first to determine the processing speeds, heating temperatures, amounts of moisture and formulations that create consistent, desirable textures and tastes from every batch of legume flour."

Since the snacks are made from lentils, peas, beans and garbanzos, they are good for human health, the ARS claims. Legumes are low in sodium and fat, cholesterol-free, as well as being rich in protein and fiber, so reduce the risk of a variety of health problems such as obesity, heart disease, cancer and diabetes, Berrios says. The ARS is currently looking for industry partners to commercialise and market the snack, both in the US and the international market.

 Petfood-induced nephrotoxicity
There is now good evidence that a combination of two adulterants in petfoods, melamine and cyanuric acid, contributed to the deaths of hundreds of cats and dogs in the spring of 2007. The situation led to a massive recall of petfoods and caused a great deal of public concern.

The problem with melamine and cyanuric acid both having been in the adulterated petfood is that they can combine to form crystals in animal bodies. The crystals apparently can impair renal function. The prevailing theory for how cyanuric acid, ammelide and ammeline adulterated petfood is that they were co-contaminants. Incomplete reactions during melamine production could lead to the formation of these co-contaminants.

Two toxicology studies were the subjects of presentations during the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) annual meeting from October 18-24, 2007 in Reno, Nevada, USA. During the meeting, the AAVLD also released the results of the AAVLD survey of petfood-induced nephrotoxicity in North America, April to June 2007.

The AAVLD survey found 347 cases that met diagnostic criteria for "petfood-induced nephrotoxicity" from April 5-June 6, 2007. The cases involved 235 cats and 112 dogs, with 61 percent of the cats and 74 percent of the dogs having died.

Dr. Barbara Powers, AAVLD president and director of the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, said the survey probably found only a percentage of the actual cases. She said the mortality rate is not likely to be representative of all cases, however, because survey respondents had more information to submit for animals that died. Powers noted that the adulteration of petfood demonstrated a broader need for veterinarians to create a system for evaluating any toxins that may contaminate the food supply in the future.

The AAVLD formed a work group that wrote a white paper in May 2007 proposing to expand the focus of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) beyond infectious disease to include toxins. According to the paper, the NAHLN Veterinary Analytical Toxicology Response and Surveillance system would complement the Food Emergency Response Network by concentrating more on animal health than on food.
